E-commerce brings home the bacon

Smoked bacon and the Internet may look odd partners, but not to Chris Battle. "I've had to eat my words," says Battle, a Yorkshire butcher. "When my daughters suggested we sell smoked bacon on the Internet I thought they were daft. But now we sell more than three tonnes per week to customers as far a field as Peru, Japan and South Africa."

Five years ago, the family-owned shop in Keighley had annual sales of £90,000. Chris and his wife, Barbara, had developed a process for making traditional-style bacon by

smoking it over fires fuelled with oak shavings. Initially business grew through word of mouth and press coverage, generating growing mail-order sales for the business, Jack Scaife Butchers, which had been founded by Barbara's family at the turn of the century.

But the battle hated spending money on marketing to generate mail-order sales. "Spending £1,000 setting up a web site sounded like total waste of money," he says. "I scoffed at the idea but Joanne and Angela pestered me into doing it."

The web site was set up in early 1997. "There was no response for several weeks," says Battle. "Then business suddenly took off and now a quarter of our business is going for export. Our turnover has grown to £750,000 and keeps on rising. We have spent a total of £1,600 on the site but we now find ourselves competing on a level footing with big corporations."

Battle's scepticism is long gone. "Success demanded nothing more than offering an unusual product in a site that was easy to find," he says. "Other businesses should give it a go. E-commerce is the future of business without doubt."
